Subject: Re: Capt. Daniel Youngs

I am a volunteer at the Long Island Studies Institute (Nassau County
Division of Museum Services). We have in our collection, Captain Youngs
Order Book 1780-1783. This book is summarized in an article appearing in
The Nassau County Historical Society Journal, Voume LII, 1997. There is
no evidence that Captain Youngs was an American Spy. This story may
have been spawned by the fact that George Washington stayed one evening
at the Youngs' homestead during his inspection tour of Long Island after
the war. It is also possible that Washington was fence-mending since
there were many Long Islanders, former Tories, who chose to remain in
the United States after the War. During the Revolution, Youngs
apparently carried out his duties as an Officer of the King.
