Subject: RICHARD TOTTEN 1800-1887 AND RELATED TOTTEN FAMILY OF LONG ISLAND

I am searching for information about my great great grandfather, Richard Totten (1800-1887). He was married to Mary Woodman Bampton (also listed in family records as Mary Bampton Bloom), who died c. 1873. I find the family together only once in the 1860 census. By 1880, Richard Totten is a widower living in Oyster Bay. "My" Richard Totten, according to family oral history, was the son and the grandson of earlier Richard Tottens, but I have been unable to find any information linking them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go to look for information? Richard Totten (1800-1887) had three, perhaps four children:
Mary (listed in 1860 census, who was unknown to me), Emma Louise, b. 1847(married a Hewitt), Josephine Davis Totten - b 6/13/1851,(my great grandmother), and Washington Augustus Totten b. c.1854-7 in Central Park, L.I. now Bethpage(last found in 1910 census living in Oyster Bay Town with with Maude, and daughter Elizabeth.

Again, according to family legend, my great grandmother applied for membership in the DAR, but had it denied as the family were Loyalists during the Revolution.

I have searched On-line church/cemetery records, and have found Tottens associated with both Oyster Bay and Hempstead, but have still found no links to my direct ancestor. Can anyone suggest other sources, please. Thank you,
