In our experience, it is not possible to successfully replace the sound card because it is not possible to remove it physically or disable it fully in Device Manager.
Disable the modem in Device Manager and install a new modem as a PNP device. Let the system assign it to an unused IRQ -- not the one presently used by the modem.
