If you remove the original video card and replace it with the new one, at the very least it should work in DOS (the white on black screens that precede Windows). If you get nothing, it means the video card is defective, or more likely, that the motherboard doesn't recognize the video card.
The older the motherboard and the newer the video card, the more likely it is that the motherboard won't recognize the new card. Try another video card and/or check with the motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update.
Our advice: If the motherboard is old and you have a working video card, live with it.
