Subject: Re: AOL Plus

We dealt with this problem earlier for a client. Here's what we got from AOL after six rounds of email:
Currently, we are investigating the delivery of the AOL Plus features and ways to control, disable, or remove it's capibilities.

In the meantime, if you wish not to have the AOL Plus window appear on your screen, a short term fix is to use the directions below to remove the AOL Plus tool and reinstall the AOL 5.0 software over the top of your existing copy. This will replace any missing or updated files that contain AOL Plus content. This procedure will not cause you to lose any saved email, your Favorite Places, the address book, or any other contents of your Personal Filing Cabinet (PFC.)

You may wish to print this e-mail for offline reference.

To print this e-mail, please follow the steps below:
1. Select FILE from your America Online (AOL) toolbar.
2. Select PRINT and follow the prompts to print this e-mail.

First, exit America Online completely and delete the America Online 5.0\TOOL folder.

1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.

2. Double click on the hard drive where AOL is installed (by default, this is the C: drive)

3. Double click on the folder 'America Online 5.0'

4. Click one time to highlight the TOOL folder, then press the Delete or DEL key on your keyboard. Choose Yes to the prompt to send the folder to the Recycle Bin.

Second, reinstall the AOL software from a recent AOL 5.0 CD-ROM.

1. Insert the AOL 5.0 CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installation will automatically begin. If prompted, choose the Existing Member option and click Next.

2. Choose the option to add an existing AOL account to your computer, then click Next.

3. After a check of your computer system, you may be prompted with a notice that you are attempting to install an older version of the software, choose Yes to continue.

4. If prompted to select the account to upgrade, look through the list of AOL copies on your system and choose the one with the most recent 'last used' date, click that line then choose Next.

5. Change the folder that the AOL software will be installed to by clicking the Expert Install... button. The top white line will have the folder AOL will be installed to, make sure that this reads C:\America Online 5.0 with no additional letters following 5.0. Click OK, then click Next.

The new installation will not contain your Screen Names. Follow the steps below to sign on to your existing AOL account and update the Select Screen Name: list.

1. From the AOL Sign On screen, select EXISTING MEMBER from the Select Screen Name: list.
2. Sign on to AOL. If you have not already retrieved your access numbers, you will be walked through a quick and easy setup.
3. On the Registration window, select the option YOU ALREADY HAVE AN AOL ACCOUNT YOU WANT TO USE. Screen Name and Password fields will appear.
4. Enter your existing Screen Name and password in the appropriate fields and click on NEXT.

The steps above will allow you to sign on to your existing account and update the Select Screen Name: list with your current Screen Names.

NOTE: The Favorite Places, Address Book, and other
transferred files may not immediately integrate into the
fresh software. These features will return upon the
second sign on.
