Subject: external cd-rom installation after reformating hard drive

The hard drive on my laptop has been reformated and I am now trying to install windows98.
The laptop I purchased does not have an internal cd-rom so I purchased an exteral one.
I have a windows 98 boot disk but, it does not contain drivers compatible with my cd-rom.
How do I load the drivers from the dos prompt given to me by the boot disk and install windows 98?
I have some PC knowledge but will probably need a step by step solution. Please help!
