In order to access the external CD-ROM from DOS, you need to load PCMCIA card services in DOS.
Some CD-ROMs come with generic services that might work with your laptop. You'll need to read the CD-ROM manual for instructions on using them.
All laptops come with PCMCIA card services that work in Windows. Some provide services that work in DOS. Again, consult the specific laptop manual.
If your CD-ROM or your laptop has the DOS software services you need, you'll find instructions on how to modify your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Follow the instructions, but modify the files on your boot disk, not on the hard drive.
In the absence of the required software, we'd suggest you get a copy of Windows on floppies.
Good luck!
