1. This seems to be a mechanical defect, which you should explore with the manufacturer. If you bought your BJC-4400 within the U.S.A., go here

and drill down through Customer Care for your product.2. If you can't get a no-cost or low-cost resolution from Canon, and the printer is not under warranty, we suggest you bite the bullet and buy another. Printer repairs cost as much or more than new ones.
3. If you need to buy a new one, we sugggest you read Consumer Reports first. For overall quality, customer satisfaction, and low frequency of repairs, they recommend HP products. This is in accord with our experience.
