Subject: NEC 6230 powers display

Hi. I have an old NEC 6230 that's display is slowly fading to black. I have an NEC MultiSync XE15 monitor that I wish to use in place of the LCD. The problem is when I plug the monitor into the back of the laptop, the laptop will not power up. If I do this when the power is on, the laptop powers off. Wierd? Anyway, is there something that I have to do, or is this laptop destined for the recyle bin.
