In modern machines such as yours, there is no switch or jumper that needs to be set to tell the system how much RAM is on board.
Your machine either has defective SIMM sockets (unlikely) or the RAM you tried is defective (possible) or incompatible (likely).
Two sources of incompatible RAM:
1. Your machine uses memory without parity (eight chips on the board) and you're trying to install memory with parity (three or nine chips on the board).
2. You've purchased memory which is too fast for your PC. New RAM may have 50 or 60 ns cycle times and your PC is designed for 70 ns.
3. You've purchased EDO RAM which is used in the newest machines and yours is not capable of reading it.Read your operating manual or use Packard Bell's online support at
http://www.packardbell.com
to determine the correct RAM type. Most likely your PC was designed for 72 pin non-parity fast page 70 ns SIMMs with tinned leads.Another approach to getting the right memory. Buy it online from an outfit such as Micron
http://www.micron.com
which will ship you the right memory if you specify your manufacturer, series, and model correctly.Good luck!
