Subject: MIDI playback problems

MIDI files will play in my internet browser (Firefox 2.0.0.1), but won't play in my media players when saved to HDD.
Yes, my SW Synth is un-muted.
Yes, my default playback device is Microsoft's GS Wavetable SW Synth.
...yes, my speakers are working, plugged in, and with the volume turned up.
Since they play fine in the browser, there are no hardware issues. I'm assuming it's software related.
I can't tell you when this started to happen, but the last time I saw having audio troubles was when I installed Morrowind IV (I've uninstalled it, since my videocard just wasn't up to running it).
Anyone have any suggestions/links to update/change/repair my playback device?
