Subject: Re: Cannot re-install "hp faxphone"

I have the HP Pavilion 7270, and have had exactly the same problems when trying to install a fresh copy of the Faxphone software. After doing a *lot* of browsing for information, I came to the conclusion that the problem is not defective modems or corrupt installation software. After reading about lots of people with the same problem, I came across one explanation by an HP Pavilion technician: the separate Faxphone software does not run if there aren't some necessary Faxphone files already installed. The only way to make faxphn23.exe install would be to have the previous version on the hard drive.

This makes you have to return to the abominable Pavilion Recovery CD, and do a Selective Recovery on some files (it's explained on one of the Pavilion Forum messages). For me, that's not an option because I have FAT32 installed already and that useless CD boots from FAT16, refusing to recognize my HD.

Go figure. I guess I'll just spare the effort and treat myself to a new modem. :)
