When it works properly, the recent Hewlett Packard DeskJet printers and software are second to none.
(1) The system depends on an intact IEE 1284 cable. Make sure the cable connecting your printer to your computer has no "kinks" in it and the connectors are firmly seated. Don't overtighten the screws: this won't help and can create problems in the future.
(2) It is always possible that the error message is being generated "by mistake", that is by corrupt software. I would assign this possibility a low priority and, if all else fails, uninstall then reinstall the printer.
(3) Most likely the printer is sensing a cartridge problem, the most likely of which is clogged jets. Remove the cartridge, use isoprophyl alcohol and a q-tip to clean the business end and reseat it firmly. Use the software to clean and align the cartridge.
(4) It could be that your cartridge is damaged or defective. If you've checked the cable (the best check would be to swap it with a good cable from a friend's similar installation), cleaned, aligned and reseated the cartridge, and re-installed the printer software, try a new cartridge.
(5) Let's hope you don't get to this step. If you've done everything you could (steps 1-4), take it in for service. In the downstate New York area, we recommend Doc Audio-Video located at 7310 Bell Blvd in Bayside, NY 11364-2930.
