When installing any new software under any version of Windows, you should close all programs, including all programs running in the background. This is especially true for anti-virus software, but also applies to schedulers, to specialty screensavers, to "office" quickstarts, to utility programs. Everything.

Not closing all programs will almost definitely create problems from which you may not be able to recover.
