Well, I think I've found a solution since I posted my message yesterday (I have an AcerView 34T monitor with a Trident AGP 3D video card). And it HAD to do with the refresh rate specified in Windows. I tried various settings, and it works fine with the minimum refresh rate of 60 Hz. I was previously using the "optimal" or "default" settings in Windows. I at first thought that the refresh rate setting had nothing to do with the problem because it arised when I booted up in DOS, too. But it looks like the refresh rate sent by Windows to the monitor sets up something into it that prevents it from resetting and working normally after the "crash".
