It is also possible that the vmm32.vxd file on your hard drive is damaged or corrupt and that generates the error message you described.
To replace the damaged file with a good copy from your floppy installation disks, go to the Microsoft support site (http://www.microsoft.com) and get Support Article ID: Q129605, which explains How to Extract Original Original Compressed Windows Files.
The procedure is pesky, so let's hope the other alternatives work for you.
