The fax in your PC uses the fax capability of your modem and the FAXPhone software by Ring Zero Systems. If the fax stops working, it usually means (a) the fax function of the modem is defective, or (b) the fax software is corrupt.
You did the right thing by trying to re-install the fax software. Since the installation failed at the point where I would expect the software to be checking the fax function of the modem, it seems very likely that the modem is indeed defective.
If one section of the modem fails, the entire modem needs to be replaced. The HP Pavilion 7275Z came with a 14.4 fax/33.6 data modem. If you have a parts and labor warranty still in effect, I'd have the manufacturer's dealer replace the modem.
Most likely, your PC is out of warranty. In this case you can expect a labor charge of about $75 for carry-in service. I would recommend that you replace the modem with an upgraded version, one capable of 56.6 data downloads.
If your modem is a part of your PC's motherboard, or is contained on a specialized daughterboard, you'll do best to have a competent repair shop replace the modem. If the modem is a standard card plugged in to one of several similar expansion slots, you can probably replace the modem yourself if you're willing to read and follow the installation instructions.
Good luck!
