Subject: Web Site Development Issues
Dear Friends:
At the present time I am preparing to engage a web designer to create my business web site. The designer I am considering is a specialist in designing web sites for my particular type of business; he also offers hosting and search engine services.
Since I am expecting to potentially spend substantial sums of money over a period of time, I am especially concerned about the ownership and control of my web site. I asked him about this issue on two occasions and have had no reply from him on this question. He did, however, advise me that while there is no written agreement, I may e-mail him any questions and concerns that I have to which he will promptly respond.
My question to you is how do I make sure that I own and control my web site? I know that if I engage his web design services, I will soon see my site on the computer monitor. However, once the site is completed and he is no longer engaged as my web designer, how do I make changes to my web site? He has advised me that some of the content and material used in the web site is copyrighted.
Then, if at some time I decide to terminate his hosting and search engine services, will I have the ability to engage a different service without having to seek his permission? What if one day his telephone does not answer and I find that he is out of business, how do I make sure that my web site presence continues?
Please advise. Thank you very much.
