You are wise not to format the drive.

The most thorough way to examine and delete photos would be to use Find (from Start) and search for *.jpg, then *.gif. Photos downloaded from the Internet would be either JPGs or GIFs. You'd have to double-click on each file, examine it, and decide whether to delete. This would be a royal pain because there are normally many such files on any PC.

Less thorough, but pretty safe. In Control Panel, go to Internet Options and delete Temporary Internet Files and also erase the History.
