You need to determine the locus of the problem. It could be your sound card (do system sounds work). It could be Media Player (can you play audio using Real Player). It could be the CD-ROM (are the files you're trying to play on the CD). It could be the files you're trying to play (do they play elsewhere).
Suggest you buy a beer for a local nerd and let him/her troubleshoot.
