Subject: HDD in "MS DOS compatibility mode"

Some tim ago, I have added an IBM 42 Gb hard drive into my Compaq 5670 running Win ME...no problems (I think I used IBM's DM2000 to set up the disk). However when I recently tried to upgrade to Win2000, the upgrade process could not find the disk. When further tracing the problem, I could see that the disk is in "MS DOS compatibility mode" and some disk utilities refer to it as FAT32X.
Now, the question is "how can I upgrade the disk without reformatting it" ?
