Subject: Re: Correcting Bad Sector on Hard Drive

It is not possible to "correct" a bad sector. A bad sector is "bad" because it is defective and can't be used reliably.

It is normal for an older disk to have several bad sectors. If you have many bad sectors, if the area containing bad sectors is large, and in particular, if the bad sectors are at the beginning and/or end of the disk, it's time to back up the disk immediately and get a new one.

If there are a few bad sectors scattered throughout the disk or just one isolated small patch, run ScanDisk "thorough" repeatedly until it stops finding additional bad sectors. That will isolate them so they won't be used. (Once the operating system marks a sector as "bad", it no longer tries to access the sector.)

Incidentally, you can "see" where the bad sectors are on the disk by running the Defragmenter and selecting "Details".

Good luck!
