If DriveSpace is not installed, it is nevertheless available from the distribution media (floppy disks or CD-ROM), or for early versions of Windows 95, from the optional Plus! disk.
However, as you can see from the problems described on this Forum, DriveSpace is very often more trouble than it's worth. We do not recommend it in most cases.
If you've removed all non-essential programs and you're still getting "no room" error messages, check your available disk space. Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive icon and select Properties. If you have less than about 50 MB available, you need to increase space.
You can buy some space by looking for and deleting TMP files, by deleting old operating system files if any, by deleting unneeded sounds and images (these take up a lot of room), by deleting leftover downloads, by removing Windows components you don't use, by cleaning out your browser cache and setting it to use less disk space, etc.
"No room" could also refer to RAM. Modern software needs a minimum of 16 MB RAM and often reports no room for anything less than 32 MB.
Of course, the best solution for a disk space problem is a new hard drive. Hard drives are dirt cheap and virtually every machine is capable of handling drives up to 8.4 GB with the manufacturer's overlay software. Check www.egghead.com, for example, where you can buy a top name drive about that size for around $100.
Our recommendation: get a new drive and increase your available RAM if it's less than 32 MB.
Here's to health and happiness in 2000!
