The newest versions of Microsoft's drive compression software are virtually trouble-free in my experience, so I'm surprised at your report.

Here's my suggestion: Restart Windows 95 in the Safe Mode (hit F8 as the PC boots up, just before it accesses the hard drive). In the Safe Mode, uninstall the compression software.
Then reboot, and get the latest version of DriveSpace/Compression Agent from the Microsoft website. If you install that following the default prompts, I think you'll find everything works nicely.
