Subject: Hard drive not recognized

I have an IBM Aptiva that I am trying to restore to factory settings. I put the restoration disk in and started to reformat the hard drive. Soon afterwards something went wrong so I shut down the computer.

I restarted the computer and it would not boot to windows98; I don't remember exactly what error messages if any came up. I inserted a startup disk in drive A: so that I could get into DOS and reformat the hard drive in order reinstall windows98.

When I used scandisk on the C: drive, I got a message saying that NO FIXED DISKS PRESENT. The same message came up when I typed in Format C:/s. I did notice however, when I started my boot disk I got a message saying WIN98 HAS DETECTED THAT DRIVE C: DOES NOT CONTAIN A VALID FAT OR FAT32 PARTITION.

As mentioned in the forum I did take the cover off and tried to reseat the hard drive connections but that did not seem to help. One point I forgot to mention is the cd-rom is working and the hard drive appears to spin.

I do not know where to go from here. Please help!

Thank you,
Oscar Brunner
