Before compressing a drive using DriveSpace (or any other compression software), we recommend the following four steps:
(1) Make a backup of all essential files on your hard drive. If you have all the software needed to rebuild your hard drive from scratch, this means only the files you've created (word-processing documents, email, images, game settings, etc.). If you don't, you should perform a total backup to a tape or zip-type drive if you have it, otherwise to floppies (be prepared to load up 50+ floppies!).
(2) Run ScanDisk and set it for "thorough" -- which takes a long time but checks the hard drive physically -- and autofix.
(3) Run a full Defrag on the drive. If you haven't done this recently, it will take a long time, so be patient.
(4) Remove all programs from the Startup group. Check your win.ini file and remove all unessential programs from the run and load lines. And disable any anti-virus program so that it will not run again until after the drive has been compressed. If you don't understand, are unfamiliar with, or aren't sure about performing any of these four steps -- all are essential to your success -- please consult with a local PC expert. A mistake in compressing your hard drive could mean that you lose access to everything on it -- permanently.
Good luck!
