Until recently, individuals and small businesses had few choices when they wanted to sell merchandise without going into the business of selling. Ads posted on bulletin boards, tucked under windshield wipers, placed in Pennysavers, or listed in the Classifieds cost little, reached few, and were more miss than hit. Display ads in newspapers and magazines, radio and TV spots, consignment and auction placements all were more effective, but at steeper, often prohibitive prices. And then came online auctions like those at Amazon.com, eBay®, and Yahoo!.

eBay® auctions revolutionized personal and small scale selling. Suddenly it was possible to reach targeted audiences – worldwide – for less than the cost of a Pennysaver ad. Aunt Wilma found buyers for her hand-stitched quilts, Henry sold last semester's text, and Royal Cleaners recycled their dry cleaning machine before retiring to Florida. Selling it was never easier!

Never easier, that is, until Ted McBain, marketing guru extraordinaire, joined the WebShop, home of Websites that work. The result? Auctions that work. One of Ted's first efforts was this website, built to sell an heirloom chess set by avant garde artist, Man Ray. Then came this one, used in tandem with an auction on eBay® to sell a free-standing frozen yogurt machine. Ted had found his niche. His thing? Harnessing the power of the Internet, and more particularly the power of eBay® auctions, to produce effective, low cost selling solutions.
Ted, who sincerely tries to live up to his reputation – it has been said that "he can sell anything to anyone" – created this auction, which sold a silver gelatin print of Man Ray's
circa 1920 photo of Russian chess king, Alekhine. Another eBay® auction by Ted found a new home for a vintage mink coat. Still another, coupled with an explanatory website, sold the Complete Home Buyers Agency, a real estate broker's website. Want to see more? Ted describes his job as negotiating a tightrope anchored on one end by the seller – his contractual boss – and on the other by the buyer(s), his virtual boss.
